The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James 318 pages

This book came across my desk as a donation to the library.  I thought it would make a great Halloween read and I was right!  Poor Maddy is a young servant girl in 1920's England.  She is on her own in search of work when she is attacked and left for dead by 3 men.  She survives and makes her way to a farmhouse where she is taken in and nursed back to health, but she is never the same.  She will not speak, will not leave the property and is deathly afraid of men.  Ultimately she hangs herself in the barn and this is where the story begins.  Mrs. Clare enlists the aid of Alistair Gellis, a ghost  hunter, to  help her rid her property of the mischievious ghost of Maddy.  But Maddy will not tolerate the presence of a man, so Alistair hires Sarah, who turns out to be very perceptive of Maddy's powers.  Maddy is no hoax.  She is powerful and she is angry and she will not rest until the three men who attacked her are made to pay. Will handsome, rich Alistair, his dark, unsettling partner, Matthew, and young Sarah live to tell the tale? Or in trying to help Maddy rest in peace, will they be destroyed also?
