The Realm of Last Chances by Steve Yarbrough 272 pages

Kristen and Cal Stevens move from California to Massachusetts after Kristen loses her job as a university administrator.  She is hired at a small campus outside of Boston, at a lower salary, and with less prestige. Cal is a talented musician and handyman and also has secrets in his past.  As these are revealed, the tension in the story increases.  At one point he confesses part of his hidden past to the wife of one of his friends.  When she confronts Kristen with the information, she asks Kristen why she did not know these details, and Kristen responds that she never thought to ask Cal.

Kristen becomes friends with Matt, their divorced neighbor, and their friendship becomes more than that.  Her job at the college becomes a nightmare when accusations of plagiarism by faculty members come to light.  Meanwhile Cal makes friends with a neighbor and some of the local people who congregate at the neighbor’s house.

This is a good, fast paced story.  I never thought reading about the life of a college administrator would be remotely interesting, but I enjoyed this book a lot.
