Taylor and her family move from the city to a farm with sheep, ducks,
and chickens. Taylor struggles with how to adapt to farm life; from wearing mud brown barn
boots to school, collecting chicken eggs without getting hammered with poop, to
the loneliness she feels.
Taylor constructs a plan to get her family to sell the farm so that they
can move back to the city. She stops turning in her homework, acts out in
class, and even wears inappropriate clothing to school to gain demerits. One fateful night on the farm changes Taylor’s opinion. With her
parents at the hospital, Taylor must help Ruby, the sheep, deliver her lambs
before something terrible happens.
Barn Boot Blues is a Mark Twain Award Nominee for this year and I recommend this book for 4th to 6th graders.
