Kind of Cruel by Sophie Hannah 434 pages

What I love most about Sophie Hannah’s books is the care she takes in creating her characters so that no matter how many flaws or how heinous their crimes, you can’t help but feel for them. In Kind of Cruel married detectives Charlie Zailer and Simon Waterhouse investigate the murder of young school teacher Katharine Allen. The case is going cold, the only clue the words “Kind, Cruel, Kind of Cruel” etched on a notepad. Coincidentally, earlier that day Charlie, while at the hypnotist’s office heard those exact words uttered by the previous patient Amber Hewerdine. By days end Amber is arrested for Katharine’s murder. The problem is that Amber can’t remember where she’s seen or heard those words before (they came up while she was under hypnosis) and she knows remembering may be the only way she can clear her name. Beautifully written, lots of twists and turns, and characters you want to take home with you. My favorite kind of book.
