Temptation by Jude Deveraux 346 pages

I must confess, this is not my usual genre.  I do not think I have read a historical romance since I was in high school and loved Victoria Holt.  This book was a pleasant surprise.  Let me just say up front, it is not a bodice ripper!  Temperance O'Neil is a womans rights activist in New York in 1909. She can do pretty much as she pleases, using an inheritance from her father to fund her endeavors.  That is until her mother marries a Scotsman who takes control of her funds and wants to move his new family to Scotland!  They strike a deal.  Temperance will have a generous allowance and be able to continue her endeavors IF she will pose as a housekeeper for her step-father's nephew and find him a wife.  Ah, but here is where it gets interesting.  Good thing Temperance is such a strong woman.  James lives in a hovel that was once an elegant mansion, cares only for his live stock, wants to protect the people in his village, and has been known to chuck potential brides out the window.  Throw in a treasure hunt, a mistress and interfering parents and you have a pretty interesting book.  Not to mention a hunk in kilt!
